City of Greenville Town Common Riverfront Park

The East Group has supported a wide range of projects within Greenville’s Town Common, serving both as lead designer and in collaboration with partner firms. Notably, our team contributed to the Tar River Legacy Plan and the Town Common Master Plan Update, often working alongside design partners to carry concepts through construction documents, permitting, and implementation.

Our experience across the Town Common includes:

  • Inclusive Playground (2016)
    Designed to work with over 16 feet of grade change, using hills and terraces to seamlessly connect play areas.
  • Restroom Building (2018)
    Site design supporting building layout and circulation, with consideration for future master plan improvements and the adjacent playground.
  • Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza (2021)
    Site development focused on grading, accessible walkways, utility service, tree preservation, permitting, and public engagement.
  • First Street Parking + Complete Street Retrofit (2018 | Plan Only)
    Developed a vision for safer multimodal traffic patterns and stronger connections between Center City and the Town Common.
  • Town Creek Pedestrian Bridge Improvements (2020)
    Redesigned the deck of a preserved 1927 bridge, increasing pedestrian capacity while maintaining its historic character.
  • East End Public/Private Partnership (2022 | Plan Only)
    Created a site-specific master plan envisioning a terraced shoreline and future mixed-use amenities to complement the park.
  • Bulkhead + Esplanade Improvements (In Progress)
    A major investment—supported by a $5 million grant from the State of North Carolina and additional local funding as part of an approximately $20 million project—is centered on replacing the park’s 57-year-old bulkhead to improve flood protection while enhancing the riverfront experience. Planned features include:

    • A multi-use path connecting the east and west ends of the park
    • Terraced lawn seating and overlooks with river views
    • A flexible-use west plaza
    • A proposed boat dock and gangway for improved river access
    • Enhanced loading access for the amphitheater
